Chroma by Dani's Notebook is a game about the simple nature of surviving in a wild and dangerous universe. You must shoot the enemy before it reaches you while analyzing its color type so you don't die.
At its most formal basis, Chroma is the story of a simple spaceship surviving against the inevitable end that comes for all of us. The thesis that is brought by chroma is that of survival by pure will, no matter what color of blood an "asteroid" (which in truth is just another name the creator used to refer to the enemies species) blood may be.
However, I believe this explanation is not enough. I believe that there is another side to this game, it's other side of the coin, its antithesis. While at first sight, this is a story about survival, the question that we must ask is, who is the one trying to survive? With the game environment, we only know that one is the attacker and one is the defender, however, how are we sure that the player character is the hero of this story? Everyone who gets shot by the player explodes, and anyone that survives, that crosses the line where they won't get shot makes the player lose automatically. One could then theorize that they are only trying to escape the incoming genocide caused by the player.
Still, I do not believe this is the full story of Chroma. I believe that by combining the thesis and antithesis of the game we can reach its full truth, its synthesis. The truth of the matter is that there are no heroes and no villains. We are all thrown into the universe to survive, and we must survive by any means necessary. Chroma’s true story is that of the invincible, uncompromising, and apathetic nature of the universe. It’s the story of the inevitable end we all must compromise to meet, and the divine right every creature has to survive and live.
Chroma is a perfect narrative that's wrapped in mystery — but not superseded — by its simple design. We don’t know everything because we are not supposed to, we are only children of the universe made with blood and cogs trying to see the next morning. If you ever can, I would one thousand percent recommend you play the game. I will be excitedly awaiting the next amazing game by Dani’s Notebook and will remain attendant to any of the masterful narratives the creator puts in its next game.
